Flashback 2006: Top Songs

Here are my favourite songs of the year....the list is long...could have added more songs

Ajnabi Shehar - Jaan-e-mann
This song simply rocks......it transforms you to a fairy land....one of the best songs of all time...Gulzar, Anu and Sonu complement each other well.....

Aaj ki raat - Don
Most haunting track of the year....this song has a typical 80s disco feel to it....Sonu, Mahalaxmi and Alisha sang this song well..though entire credit should go to SEL for making me nostalgic with 80s soundtracks....also check out the intricacies in the video of this song....the spoiler of the film is cleverly woven in the songs lyrics as well as Isha/Shahrukh's body language....this is my most heard track of the year

Roobaroo - RDB
Simply love this track for the guitar interludes and Rahman's music....

Jaaneman - Aryan
This song did not get the attention it should have deserved...had this been in a Yashraj film it would have been aggressively promoted and would have been a chartbuster.....Sonu and Shreya are utterly sweet in this song....

Yeh hai meri kahani - Zinda
Best composed number of the year..check out the musical arrangements in the song...it is simply mindblowing....has a typical western soundtrack....

Ek pal ke liye - Ankahee
Another song which did not get the necessary credit....KK was at his best in this song....

Ya Ali- Gangster
Though lifted the song was very well sung by Zubin and ably supported by Pritam (composer)...Zubin is one of the top contenders for winning this year's major awards....

Chand Sifarish - Fanaa
What a way to end their duo career.....Jatin Lalit gave a lilting number (check the santoor interlude)...Shaan's vocal should atleast earn him a place in all award ceremonies this year....

Mitwa- KANK
No one expected SEL to come up with this number which had a typical Pakistani feel to it...moreover the range displayed by Shafaqat was awesome...he like Zubin is another top contender for male singer award.....

Title - KANK
Whoever thought that Alka is past her peak should listen to this track....still has the same ol' Alka golden touch to it.....Sonu too sung this song well...this was a stereotypical SEL number

Beedi - Omkara
one of the best item numbers of all times...can you imagine a lyricist like Gulzar giving 2 back to back excellent item numbers in a span of 1 year (Beedi and Kajra re)......Sunidhi should win the top female singer award hands down for this song.....

Tere Bin - Bas Ek pal
Atif continues from where he left last year (Wo Lamhe and Aadat)...he is one of the most talented singers in Bollywood today and if properly used can be the Sonu Nigam of the coming generation.....

Masti ki pathshala - RDB
what an energetic college number with some really cool lyrics.....song that heard the most in college festival last year.....

Pal pal - LRM
Shreya might end up giving stiff competition to Sunidhi (Beedi) for this sweet number....This song just seems to be an extension of Chann Chann (Munnabhai MBBS)...this song consolidates Shreya position as the Lata Mangeshkar of our generation (I can say that Sunidhi is the Asha Bhosale of today's generation)

Baawri Piya-Baabul
One of the best songs sung by Sonu...its a classic...since it was not well promoted the song might not feature in any awards.....Sonu has rarely sung a classical song but this song alongwith Behka Diye (Umrao Jaan) confirms that no genre is difficult for this singer...Sonu is simply the God when it comes to singing/versatility

Aa paas aa- Ankahee
Another superb track from Shreya....again since the film didn't do well this song went unnoticed..

Neele neele aasmaan - Holiday
Shreya rules again in this number...

Sau Dard - Jaan-e-mann
Another mindblowing slow emotional number from Sonu..

Tu hi meri shab hai- Gangster
great lounge number and one of the songs to feature in almost every remix album...KK as usual sang this song well...

Teri yaadon - Killer
This too went unnoticed but was an amazing number....

Flashback 2006: Music

The year has almost come to an end...so why not review some of the fine albums of this year....

Rang de basanti: Probably the best album of the year in terms of variety....movie has a typical college number (Masti ki pathshala), excellent romantic song (Tu Bin bataye), bhangra (title song), mother missing her child (Lukka chupi), prayer (Ik onkar), patriotism (Khoon chala)...but the pick of the lot was Roobaroo...mindblowing number (check the guitar interludes) and so well picturised.....almost a perfect ending to a near perfect movie... A R Rahman gave a great album after a long time

Fanaa: last album by my fav music director Jatin-Lalit...excellent songs like Chand Sifarish sung brilliantly by Shaan, Dekho Na and Tere Haath mein from Sonu-Sunidhi.....all the tracks were wonderful...wish there were few more songs in the album...
http://nahush.blogspot.com/2006/04/music-review-fanaa.html

Gangster: surprise album of the year....no one expected Gangster to have such beautiful numbers...so what if Pritam borrowed tracks from Middle-east...songs were simply amazing...it also introduced new singing talents like Zubin and James.....Ya Ali was one of the most successful song of the year...Bheegi Bheegi and Tu hi meri shab hai were not far behind......

KANK:SEL continues to give one hit album after another.....last year success story of B&B was carried forward with KANK and Don....2007 too looks positive for this trio with Salaam-e-ishq...coming backto KANK it was a typical Yash Chopra- Karan Johar album..Sonu was brilliant in the title track so was Mitwa by Shafaqat Ali.....Mitwa had a typical Pakistani feel to it and the track was superb..Tumhi dekho na was a typical Jatin-Lalit number...in all one of the great albums of this year

Bas Ek Pal: very little was expected from this movie...but when the album hit the music stands there was no looking back...al the tracks were amazing each being unique in its own way...Tere Bin became the anthem of the country..Atif was as usual great in this song... Yeh Ishq hai kya was a classy party number..Ashq bhi and Zindagi Hosh were also great.....my personal favourite....
http://nahush.blogspot.com/2006/08/2-amazing-albums.html

Jaan-e-mann: Anu Malik is back with a bang....songs like Ajnabi Shehar and Sau Dard are amongst best tracks ever composed by Anu Malik...Ajnabi Shehar is the best song of the year....Humko Maloom hai and Jaane ki jaane were also great numbers....but still Ajnabi Shehar mesmerizes me....what a track

Don: Aaj ki Raat gave a typical 80s disco feel.....thats why this song is my personal favourite....it is my most heard song of this year....everyone felt that Khaike Paan and Yeh mera Dil were the best numbers but I felt that Aaj ki raat was one of the best lounge/disco numbers in recent times....Even the title song sung by Shaan was good.....Khaike Paan was a downer though Yeh Mera Dil was cute...
http://nahush.blogspot.com/2006/08/don-chase-begins.html

Ankahee: Most underrated album of this year...check out Ek Pal ke liye and Aa Paas Aa..Shreya Ghoshal and Kay Kay sang these songs really well....even Kunal Ganjawala was great in Tumse yoon milenge...even Pritam (composer) thinks that this album didnt get the attention which it deserved.....

Omkara:Beedi was one of the best item number of all times...Sunidhi and Sukhwinder gave the song a very rustic feel...Title song and Namak were also great numbers....Gulzar was at his best so was Vishal....

Dhoom 2 : Better late than never

Disappointing...this is the 1st thing that came out of my mouth after watching D2. Moreover this was the reaction of many cinegoers in the theatre........but the box office report tells a different story...biggest bollywood movie of all time (breaking the record of Gadar).....according to me the movie worked because of Hrithik's popularity and death defying stunts.....

The movie starts in a predictable manner...Hirthik trying to rob diamonds from a train (a la Roop ki Rani choron ka raja)...however the stunts during this sequence though stunning are illogical..it was referred in the movie that Hrithik does a robbery in a country only once...but he ends up robbing in India twice...why

the museum loot is also illogical...how can a 6 inch high remote car escape the eyes of 20 security guards even when the car is moving at snail's pace....also how can one expect Hrithik to come out of the gutter through a jet and rise to such a height....also how come hrithik has all the solutions to escape during that robbery..think of highly acidic solution in his boots and magnets on his hands.....

the 2nd half is too slow and concentrates more on the relationship between Ash and Hrithik...also Abhishek's character looks very weird throughout the movie....he literally looks dumb.....all the smartness that he gained in dhoom seems to been lost in D2....also Ash's character is somewhat loud...why does she have to mouth those irritating words like "funny guy" and "like" so often..... Bipasha's character is not at all required in the movie...she does not help the story to move forward...moreover there is no need of a double role...both her characters are useless specially the one in Rio de Janeiro....dont know why they had to include Rimi Sen in the movie...her character too does not take the story forward.....it is Uday's character which continues in the same way as he left in Dhoom....

the climax is also very dull....how can Abhishek leave Ash and Hrithik even after he tracks them down...

The script is very weak so is the screenplay....there is no story...the entire movie revolves around different heists and amazing stunts... direction is pathetic.....Sanjay cannot compete with the likes of Raju Hirani, Adi Chopra, Rakesh Mehra....songs are good though a lot was expected from them....Dil lagana and Dhoom again are my picks...

Ash looks sexy in the film and so does Bipasha...but Ash still is not on par with Rani, Preity in terms of acting....she still has a long way to go....Uday is a bit irritating as Ali but this is what his character is....Abhishek does not get any scope....such a waste of a great actor...Sanjay Gadhvi needs to watch KANK, Sarkar, Bluffmaster to understand his acting abilities....

The success of Dhoom 2 has benefited one person only and that is Hrithik...Hrithik is the best thing to have happened to this movie and he is the saving grace...all his dances and stunts are stupendous....even his get-ups are mind blowing...be it statue or the queen or the dwarf...he is one of the few choosy actors who can compete with Aamir..for more evidences watch out his last 3 releases Koi mil gaya, Lakshya, Krrish.....

Great minds think alike

My fav movie is Shahrukh's fav movie too...check this out

http://movies.indiatimes.com/quickies/309796.cms

he was simply mind blowing in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa....the rawness and freshness of his early days was visible in Sunil (the character he played)..Shahrukh has never acted so well in any of his later films...Swades came close but still KHKN was miles ahead in terms of performance....excellent music and brilliant supporting cast made this film more watchable...

Jaan-e-mann: Movie review

i have mixed feelings after watching this film due to the fact that there are a lot of inconsistencies in the movie yet the story is beautifully told....

First of all the minuses
1) Was it necessary to show Anupam Kher as a dwarf...what was the sense in this
2) Was it necessary to show Anupam Kher in a double role....what was the reason to cast him as a waiter in a NY restaurant.....what a waste of such a terrific actor
3) Why didn't Akshay know that Salman was the one after Preity in the college when he met him after 7 yrs...one wld definitely remember your beau's sweetheart even after 10-15 yrs...ask me :))))
4) Why didn't Akshay ever ask Preity who her husband was or in that case why didn't Preity ever mention Suhan's name to Akshay....even the slightest hint wld have ended the movie well before time
5) Why didn't Preity ever ask Akshay where he stayed....
6) The editing was shoddy.....easily 15 mins from the first 1 hr and last 30 mins could have been chopped off

Inspite of so many minuses the plusses mostly make up for them
1) Salman was perfect in the role of Suhan so was Preity in the role of Piya. Preity didn't have much to do inspite of being on the screen for close to 2 hrs but she was adorable..Salman put in a decent sensible performance...
2) Akshay Kumar was simply brilliant as a nerdie...his overall look in the film was great....his comic laughter is sure to bring the house down....Akshay is definitely one of the most bankable star of the country right now...
3) Songs are absolutely mind blowing especially Sau dard and Ajnabi Shehar...Sonu is at his best in these 2 songs....
4) Picturisation of all the songs is stunning and the choreography is perfect
5) Shirish Kunder has handled several scenes pretty well...he is atleast a better director than his wife Farah who had messed big time in Main hoon na
6) Visuals are breathtaking...NY is shown in the most picturesque way

However looking at the competition with Don and its dismal opening I feel that this film might just be able to do average business...though there are chances that word of mouth publicity might help it recover its cost....

All in all one of the decent movies of the year.....

Classical side of Sonu

Behka Diya humein from Umrao Jaan is an ultimate song.......sonu is simply stupendous in this song...another gem to his repertoire

Rahul rockkkkkkkkkks

in Pyar ke side effects.....amazing movie...Rahul is as usual excellent...matches his Jhankaar beats performance.....worth watching n number of times just for Rahul....

even Mallika is adorable and decent.....Sharat Saxena and Ranvir are surprise packages....the film has some great scenes as well as dialogues....humor is intelligent so are the situations....story is not at all new but is told in a stylish way

songs gel well and are picturised well....

Lage raho munnabhai has generated renewed interests in Bapu's teachings...even the PM has applauded this fact

RDB to Oscars

Verdict is finally out...RDB is the official Indian entry for Oscars.....though it had a tough competition from LRM.....Omkara too was a dark horse....

LRM and RDB had many similarities...both tried to convey the same social message though one was through a non-violent manner while the other was in a rebellious mode.....

both are great movies...probably among the best bollywood movies in 3-4 yrs....both had equal chances of making to oscars though RDB had a universal appeal as against LRM which was too mumbaiyya....English speaking audience wouldn't have connected with LRM because the humor would have been lost through sub-titles....

All in all a fair decision...even if LRM was selected i wld have considered it a fair decision :))))

Lage raho Munnabhai: Movie review

Probably the best film of 2006....follows closely on the heels of RDB (in terms of message conveyed) and Munnabhai MBBS(in terms of humor and direction).....its one of the most original films to come out of Bollywood....

The director Raju Hirani has mixed the humor with the social message really well.....this is the director to watch out for...both his movies have been flawless and is one of the few directors who does not try to follow on the steps of Yashraj/Dharma productions..characterization is the most important part of his films.....be it Munnabhai MBBS or LRM....each character gets ample scope to show his acting abilities.....

coming back to the movie...the editing is superb; dialogues are mind blowing;screenplay is perfect......

some of the scenes simply stand out
1) Q&A round for the Mahatma Gandhi contest at Sanju's home
2) Scenes involving Mahatma, Munna and Circuit
3) Scene at the college
4) Munna turning into radio jockey and giving tips to Jimmy,Diya and the prospective bride (who has come to meet a guy in a hotel)
5) Munna and Circuit patch up
6) Climax when Boman is browsing thru Mahatma books in the library

Coming to the acting...this time again the movie belongs to Munna and Circuit....they are the most lovable characters of Bollywood today....probably the best bollywood pair today (Rani-Shahrukh, Abhishek-Rani watch out).....Jimmy is competent and Diya for a change acts well...Boman too is excellent though not on par with Munnabhai MBBS.....Dilip Prabhavalkar does full justice to Mahatma's role.. Vidya's performance matches to that of Parineeta and she is no longer a one film wonder....she looks really cool in a glam role...have simply fallen in love with her after watching this movie.....

music of the film gels well with the story and none of the songs seem to be forced into the movie...Bande mein tha dum, pal pal har pal and Aane char aane (sang by Karunya of Indian Idol) really stand out....

all in all a complete family entertainer........

Don: The Chase Begins

Another nice album to come after Woh Lamhe and Bas Ek pal....bollywoood this year has seen great albums Fanaa, RDB, Zinda, KANK, Woh Lamhe, Bas Ek Pal, Gangster, PKSE, Ahista Ahista with still Dhoom 2, Jaaneman, Salaam-e-Ishq to follow....

Don begins with the title track "Main Hoon Don" sung by my fav Shaan......the music and vocals are so different from the original but yet it brings up sweet memories of the original track....the music is very stylish.....Full marks to SEL and Shaan for this track

Next to strike is "Yeh Mera Dil" sung by Asha Bhosale of this decade Sunidhi Chauhan...she does complete justice to this track and this track is as good as original though not better...lets see how Kareena dances to these tunes in the movie....

"Maurya re" is a situational track and didnt sound great on first hearing....but still waiting to see Shahrukh dances during Ganesha procession in this song....

"Khaike pan banaraswaala" leaves a lot to be desired....this track could have been better...Udit Narayan sings this song well yet there is something missing.....

"Aaj ki raat" is the best album of the track sung by Sonu, Mahalaxmi and Alisha....it has traces of Raat Baaki from Namak Halaal and Main shama tu parwana from Khiladi..

the theme music and the signature tune are also good......

Now waiting with bated breaths for this movie to release.......2006 is surely going to be remembered as the year of blockbusters

2 amazing albums

Check out Woh Lamhe and Bas Ek Pal.... best albums of the year....

Woh Lamhe is just an extension of Gangster and more than matches up to it....watch out for Kya Mujhe pyar hai...the track is truly haunting with great vocals by KK and excellent chorus....So Jaaon main is another gem of a track...shreya is truly awesome...there is no doubt but to crown her as the Lata Mangeshkar of the coming years..chal chale is also a good number rendered by James (the guy who sung Bheegi bheegi in Gangster)

I have sky high expectations from Bas Ek Pal coz its directed by Onir....the guy who gave the best film of last year (in my opinion) My Brother Nikhil....moreover it has my favourite ensemble...Juhi, Urmila (my all time fav....dunno why she isnt doing many films), Sanjay Suri and Jimmy shergill.....coming back to the music check out Hai Ishq ye which has a pacy dance number...moreover the song looks really good onscreen......Tere Bin is sung by Atif (he sang Wo lamhe and Aadat)...this too is brilliantly rendered.....the title song is also a song to watch out for so is Ashq bhi....all in all a great album....such albums should not go unnoticed....far better than any of Himesh's album this year.....

Kabhi Alvida na kehna: Movie review

Avoid it...atleast in theatres....its a 3.5hr mental torture....though some of the dialogues/scenes are praiseworthy the editing leaves a lot to be desired

shahrukh as usual hams a lot (must say that he has considerably improved in hamming)...he is not his usual self as was the case in other romantic films like Mohabbatein,K2H2, DDLJ...Rani has acted really well but she cried a lot in the movie...still dunno why she was unhappy with her married life with Abhishek....

Abhishek is again a revelation.....he has shown considerable improvements in the past 2 years and he really looks cool...preity is ok..no big shakes.....amitabh is highly effective....

Songs look good on screen.....picturisation of Tumhi dekho na and rock n roll is the pick of the lot...cinematography was a bit patchy....

Karan really needs to pull his socks for the next venture and try out some kinda experimentation similar to the Yashraj banner..though the movie will send record opening in 1st week (maybe the first Bollywood movie to cross 30 crores in 1st week) it still does not match movies like K2H2, DDLJ

Note: almost 25% of the movie seems to be shot at the New Haven Union Station and the rest in New york..though NYC was not portrayed properly....

Shantanu Moitra: Composer to watch out for

Move aside Himesh and Anu, Shantanu is here in Bollywood to stay for a long time.....music in all his films has been nothing short than a classic.....It started with Leela where he composed the excellent ghazals 'Jaag ke kaati' and 'tere khayal ki' rendered in the silken voice of Jagjit Singh.....

Even before Leela happened, Shantanu had composed the signature tune for Uncle Chips "Bole mere lips, i luv uncle chips'....this was followed by the pop album Ab ke sawan (Shubha Mudgal) where he composed rustic songs like Ab ke saawan....

After Leela, they came up with Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi which had brilliant numbers like Mann yeh baawra, Title song.....This album brought them into limelight.....this was followed by the best album of last year Parineeta...all the songs were great....be it the ever hummable Piyu bole or the eternally playful Kasto Mazaa or the heart wrenching Raat hamari to.....this album was way better than Bunty aur babli which grabbed all the music awards......

After Parineeta they again turned up aces with Yahaan...the songs of this film went unnoticed....check out the songs Urzu urzu durkut and Naam ada likhna....these songs had a definite Kashmiri touch in them......dunno why such albums are not given due recognition....if there is an album which impressed me after Parineeta then it has to be Yahaan........

Now they have returned with a tapori track in Munnabhai lage raho....some of the songs are really good such as Aane char aane (sang by the versatile Karunya of Indian Idol 2 fame) , Pal pal har pal (sang brilliantly by Shreya) , Bande mein tha dum (tune is same as Aao bachcho from Jagriti) and the title song....though not as good as Parineeta and Yahaan this album still proves that Shantanu can come up with a variety of tracks.....

Another composer which impresses me nowadays is Vishal Shekhar who are more famous for funky techno tracks......

Jack Sparrow rules yet again

Just came out of the theatre watching this movie.....and man its worth every cent of my tickets....a great movie which sets up sky high expectations from the third movie......

Jack Sparrow is and will always be my most endearing, lovable screen characters of all time....all credit goes to writer and director who created this character and full marks (can i have more than that) to Johny depp...he is simply inimitable.....no other hollywood actors could have essayed such a difficult role with aplomb....he is amongst the finest actors hollywood has seen.....

Keira and Orlando were ok in this movie though not as impressive as POTC: Black pearl....but when there is jack sparrow in the movie there is nothing else to see.....

moreover the climax of the movie set up an interesting start to the next movie....the re-entry of Barbossa....i have started playing guessing game as to why Barbossa has been introduced again.....

all in all a fun film to watch and the best summer movie so far.......

Krrish: Lets celebrate Krristmas

festival time is on....all movies are churning monies are jet speed....bollywood has witnessed the best year in recent times with movies like RDB, Fanaa, Taxi 9211, Malamaal Weekly, Phir Hera Pheri, 36 Chinatown, Gangster, Chup Chupke......

Add Krrish to this list....maybe at par with RDB.....i wld still prefer RDB over Krrish....but Krrish is a movie which should not be forgotten so easily....amongst the finest directorial efforts in recent times....Rakesh has tried something very different this time also like KMG.....Krrish is a story of the first likeable superhero of this country.....

Hrithik turns up aces in this film.....his acting is not as good as KMG since it didnt demand those histronics.....however its still amongst his finest efforts......watch out for the way in which Rohit reacts in Krrish during the end reels....thats truly amazing and award-worthy....

Priyanka and Rekha are okay...Naseer and Sharat act well...........

but the main hero of the film are the action sequences and special effects which are on par with hollywood......

Krrish is definitely a movie which cannot be missed....most of the awards for 2006 should be divided between Krrish and RDB......

(Review) Fanaa: Not fanaa-tastic

The expectations were sky high from this movie....this was easily my most awaited movies in a long time... Moreover the movie had a terrific ensemble
Aamir: My favourtie
Kajol: Among the finest actress Bollywood has ever seen. Moreover this was her comeback film
Yashraj Films: The banner comes out with hit films year after year. Also the banner is now getting out of its so called candy floss movies and producing stuff like Kabul Express, Dhoom 2
Jatin-Lalit: When it comes to romantic numbers there is no other choice but to opt for JL
Kunal Kohli: He was fresh from his success of Hum Tum which had earned him several Best Director trophies

The movie started off really well. The first half was a delight to watch. The chemistry between Kajol and Aamir reminded me of Juhi-Shahrukh, Kajol-Shahrukh chemistry. Both the leads were absolutely stunning in the first half. The dialogues especially the shayaris were absolutely fanaa-tastic. Songs were properly placed. At interval time I thought that this film can become one of the classic if the pace is maintained.

However the direction and the screenplay spoilt the party. The direction was clearly patchy. I believed that the character/background of Aamir would be highlighted in the 2nd half. But this was not the case. Aamir's character was not properly outlined. The film stretched like mozarella cheese in the 2nd half. But the time it reached climax no one cared about Kajol and Aamir and the fate of the lovers. Everyone was concerned when the movie would get over. The editing in short was scissorless.

Most of the characters were half baked in the film. Dunno why Lara and Shiny were roped in for inconsequential roles. Moreover actors like Satish Shah, Vrajesh Hirjee, Suresh Menon were not able to show their skills in a miniscule role. Rishi Kapoor was a headache...when will this guy shoot a film without a glass of cognac/black label. Kiron Kher was ok. Shruti Seth aka Fatty acted well. Child artiste Rehan was the surprise package and he was really cute. His dialogue "Rehan aapse jitna pyar karta hai utna aap Rehan se nahi" was the highlight of the 2nd half.

Coming back to the main characters Zooni and Rehan. Zooni's character was more author backed than anyone in the film and Kajol did adequate justice to it. I would rate it amongst her best performances (though Dushman and Kuch Kuch Hota Hain might edge out). It was the perfect comeback for her.

Rehan aka Aamir's characters was half-baked. However his acting was on par with some of his recent movies though not the best. He looked stunning in the first half and had to rely on facial expressions in the 2nd half. Simply loved his look during the interval point (black suit with googles and short hair) when he is talking to his Nana on the phone at the airport. I love this guy for the range of movies he has done and get-up for each of this films. Be it DCH, RDB, Fanaa, Ghulam, Rangeela he is simply terrific.

But there is nothing to cheer apart from these 2 performances. This is Kunal's worst directed movie even surpassing Mujhse Dosti Karogi.

Music was catchy especially Chand Sifarish and Dekho Na.

The collections of the movie might tell a different story (20 crores in first week and a superhit tag all over India) but personally the movie is not at all fanaa-tastic

The Da Vinci Code review

I happened to see this movie today and even though I haven't read the book I found the movie gripping and well-paced......many of my friends who have read the book have complained that the movie was boring....so am planning to read it to check if that is true:))))...movie is definitely worth a watch for everyone (who have read it and who haven't read it)....

The movie lacked a good background score...moreover i was not satisfied with the camerawork (sloppy at places) and to some point with the direction....emotions were not flowing correctly in some scenes where it was needed specially in scenes involving silas as well as the jesus era.,....tom hanks was strictly ok...no big shakes....he looked a tad too old...however audrey tautou was quite impressive...she was camera-friendly....

Adieu Jatin Lalit

Time to bid goodbye to my fav music director Jatin Lalit. I have grown up listening to their songs and was particularly dejected on not getting to hear their songs too often recently (last one coming way back in 2004: Hum Tum)

This duo have continuously churned out amazing romantic numbers over a span of 15 yrs….they are the best when it comes to lovey-dovey romantic soundtracks…
lets go down the memory lane and recollect their hit albums/songs

Yaara Dildara(1991): First film by this duo. Had the ever popular ‘Bin tere sanam’ (oft repeated in remixes these days) number sung by Udit-Kavita. Another notable song was ‘Tum hi hamari ho manzil’…in brief a good start for the duo

Jo Jeeta wohi Sikandar(1992): First big banner movie (Mansoor was fresh from his QSQT success) which catapulted them to the top slots….had excellent songs ‘Pehla Nasha’, ‘Roothkar humse’, ‘Jawahon ho yaaro’, ‘Shehar ki pariyon’

Raju Ban gaya gentleman(1992): Amongst the first movies of Shahrukh..had good numbers in the likes of ‘Loveriya’, ‘Dil hai mera deewana’, title song, ‘Seene mein dil’…this movie started the shahrukh-jatin lalit 100% hit track record

Khiladi(1992): this movie had decent songs ranging from ‘kya khabar thi jaana’ to ‘hoke mann aaj magan’ and one of my favourite numbers ‘waada raha sanam’

Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa(1994): among my fav soundtracks…had really cool numbers ‘deewana dil deewana’. ‘aana mere pyar ko’, ‘kyun na hum milke’, ‘wo to hai albela’, ‘ae kaash ke hum’

DDLJ(1995): who can forget this evergreen soundtrack…..had excellent numbers in ‘tujhe dekha’ ,’ho gaya hai tujhko’, ‘mehendi lagake rakhna’, ‘ruk jaa o dil’….this marked their entry into the yashraj camp…..every music composer dreams to give music under yashraj banner and jatin-lalit were the most lucky guys as they were the most preferred composers

Khamoshi(1996): my fav album till date….none of the other movies have been able to match this soundtrack atleast IMO….outstanding numbers like ‘Baahon ke darmiyan’ ,’ aankhon mein kya’, ’sagar kinaare’, ‘yeh dil sun raha hai’, ‘aaj main upar’, ‘mausam ki sargam’

Yes Boss(1997): giving music under the Aziz Mirza banner continues for this duo (after Raju Ban…)….has the ever romantic numbers like ‘Ek din aap yu’ and ‘Main koi aisa geet’…other numbers like ‘Chaand taarein’, ‘suniye to’ and ‘jaata hai tu’ were also hummable

Pyar kiya to darna kya(1998): This movie has music by Jatin-Lalit, Himesh Reshammiya (title song) and Sajid-Wajid (Teri Jawani)…they gave the hit number ‘O o jaane jaana’ though it was a Kamal Khan number…moreover ‘Deewana main chala’ was also a decent number

Jab pyar kisise hota hai(1998): great album….had good songs like ‘o jaana’, ‘madhosh dil’, ‘ek dil tha’, ‘pehli pehli baar’ and ‘chal pyar karegi’ from this soundtrack

Pyar to hona hi tha(1998): still like to hum ‘jab kisiki taraf’, ‘ajnabee mujhko’, ‘aashiq hoon main’ ,’aaj hai sagai’

Ghulam(1998): who can forget runaway hit ‘aati kya khandala’ from this movie…had some decent numbers in ‘aankhon se tune’, ’jaadu hai tera hi’, ’ab naam mohabbat ke’

Kuch kuch hota hai(1998): JL rounded off the year in style (had 5 hit albums in 1998)…songs like title song, ‘koi mil gaya’, ‘ladki badi anjani’ and ‘yeh ladka hai deewana’ are still hummable

Sarfarosh(1999): okayish album…however ‘zindagi maut na ban jaaye’ and ‘hoshwalon ko khabar kya’ is among my fav songs… ‘is deewane ladke ko’ was also a fun track

Sangharsh(1999): this album went unnoticed but had decent numbers like ‘pehli pehli baar baliye’, ‘naraaz savera’ and ‘mujhe raat din bus’

Phir bhi dil hai Hindustani(2000): first shahrukh production and he chose jatin-lalit over other composers…had hit music : title song, ‘I m the best’, ‘banke tera jogi’, ‘aur kya’

Mohabbatein(2000): partnership with Yashraj continues in this film also….has excellent songs like ‘Humko hamise’, ‘chalte chalte’ , ‘pairon mein bandhan’, ‘aankhein khuli’

K3G(2001): this movie has music by aadesh srivastava and sandesh shandilya also and sandesh walked away with most of the accolades because of Suraj hua madhdham…inspite of this Jatin Lalit gave decent numbers like title song and ‘Yeh ladka hai allah’ which was later repeated in Fanaa (Des rangila)

Chalte chalte(2003): all the songs in this movie were good especially ‘tauba tumhare’ ,’suno na’, title song, ‘gumshuda’ and ‘prem nagariya’

Hum Tum (2004): among the best albums of the year…had sweet numbers like ‘Ladki kyun’, ‘saanson mein saanson’, ‘yaara yaara’

Fanaa(2006): Jatin Lalit sum up their career in style with outstanding numbers like ‘Chand Sifarish’, ‘Tere haath mein’, ‘Chanda chamke’, ‘Dekho na’

Other than this there were other good songs composed by this duo
Fareb: Yeh teri aankhein jhuki jhuki
Haasil: Aankhein bhi hoti hai
Kehta hai dil baar baar: title song, Aasman se chaand laao
Bada Din: Meri aankhon mein tum ho
Vaastav: Meri duniya hai
Yeh hai Mumbai meri jaan: mera chaand mujhe
Rok sako to rok lo: Jaane kise pukaare dil mera
Aankhen: Kuch kasmein hai jawaan
Raju Chacha: Tune mujhe pehchana nahi
Dhai Aksar prem ke: Do lafzon mein likhdi
Khoobsurat: bahut khoobsurat ho
Silsila hai pyar ka: yeh dil deewana hai
Dil kya kare- title song

By reading at the blog you will know that inspite of this track record they were not able to become as famous as A R Rahman, Anu Malik…moreover they have not won a single filmfare till date though they have been nominated several times…I wld still say that Jatin Lalit are one of the most successful music composers of India

Hats off to Jatin lalit!!!!!!!!

Music Review : Fanaa

Expectations are sky high from this Yash Chopra production...many reasons for this
1) Aamir and Kajol together for the first time (u can disregard Ishq as they werent paired opposite each other)
2) Kunal Kohli is back after Hum Tum
3) Also reunion of the hit pair of Jatin-Lalit and Prasoon Joshi
4) Last music soundtrack from Jatin-Lalit before their split
5) Yash Chopra tries the terrorist theme for the first time

Now going to the main topic...music....
First distinct thing is that Yashraj fav Lata and Udit do not feature in the soundtrack

The album opens with Chand Sifarish sung brilliantly by Shaan and ably supported by Kailash Kher...this song is definitely a chart buster..watch for the Santoor and whistle interlude in the song...though the whistle is inspired from Yaaran yaaran song of Hum Tum I would still give the song 9/10 because of freshness and excellent musical arrangement...

Next comes Tere Haath mein sung by Sonu and Sunidhi..a typical yashraj mushy mushy number...both of them sing well..moreover Aamir and Kajol make their presence felt with their dialogue narration...Kajol narrates the now famous line
"Tere Dil Mein Meri Sanson Ko Panaah Mil Jaaye...Tere Ishq Mein Meri Jaan Fanaa Ho Jaaye"
Actually Aamir has more lines than Kajol in this number...

This is followed by Chamda chamke which is I guess the first tongue twisting song in Bollywood...everyone has sung brilliantly though the music is directly lifted from Yaaran Yaaran (again) from Hum Tum...dunno why Jatin Lalit has to lift tunes from one song and use it in 2 songs of this soundtrack ...moreover the copied tune also was his own creation (quite different from Anu Malik :)) ...Aamir and Kajol again feature in this fun number....this number is going to be highly popular among kids.....

Next comes Dekho Na which is a good romantic number though not on par with Tere Haath Mein..this is again sung by Sonu and Sunidhi

Des Rangila follows this number and reminds me of Aisa des hai mera froim Veer Zaara...the tune is again lifted from Yeh Ladka Hai Allah from K3G...inspite of lifting tunes all these soings sound fresh....

Fanaah for you rounds of the music album...this is the remix version of Chand Sifarish by DJ Aqeel.....great party soundtrack which will be heard regularly for sometime in dicsotheques and pubs....

Overall a neat album which will surely find favours among the public....

My verdict: 2 great albums (each having a different sound)...more in my reviews later

Movie review: Shaadi se Pehle

got a chance to watch this film today.....the movie was a typical David Dhawan film (though directed by Satish Kaushik)...worth watching it once.....

movie has some funny one-liners by Sanjay Chhel...
"apun ka naam anna...chaubees ghante chaukanna"

"band karo yeh hum aapke hai kaun....lo ab aa gaya hai Don"

Akshaye and Ayesha didn't impress....Sunil Shetty and Rajpal's track was funny...Mallika as usual was hot....Anupam was totally wasted... Boman was hilarious in a miniscule role

One or two songs were ok but not on par with Himesh's standards....

May be word-of-mouth publicity might catapult this movie to do average to above average business....

Movie Review: Taxi No 9211

Excellent movie....similar on the lines of Bluffmaster....the story was quite gripping and the editing was superb...

the performances were mind-blowing especially from Nana and Sonali Kulkarni....this is among Nana's best performance (even better than Bluffmaster and Apharan)...he has really put his heart into this movie.... Sonali was also amazing...John for a change was likeable..Sameera didnt have much role but was okay....

I really liked the dialogue which Nana says to his son Rishabh
It goes something like this
Nana: Aye Rishabh, kya kar raha hai?
Rishabh: Fielding
Nana: Bat kiski hai...
Rishabh: Meri
Nana: Bat kiska? Tera....phir fielding kyun kar raha hai? Batting kar...Sachin ban Kaif nahi

The dialogues were superb.....and it has to be...all Nana movies ought to have good dialogues..(Khamoshi was the exception...u know why)

Songs too are hummable especially Mumbai Nagariya (waiting to write this song on my CD), Ek nazar and Meter Down......

Movie should gel with Mumbaites and multiplex junta......

Rang de Basanti: Review

Direction
After a long time I saw a different movie (though havent watched Bluffmaster yet).....The direction was totally different....i really liked the way in which the movie went from past to present.....the dialogues were nice but had heard them before I went to see the movie....hence the didnt njoy them much......

In short ...a great movie....

Screenplay, Editing:
the screenplay was perfect......i guess the editing was a bit shoddy..at places i thought that the scenes were abruptly cut...when someone was beginning to say something the scenes shifted...

Acting:
Aamir and Siddharth were amazing....Aamir punjabi diction was perfect.....Aamir is back at his best....his eye expressions were great.....Sukhi was lovable....Kunal looked smart....Soha was truly a revelation.....Alice emoted well

Music:
Best of AR Rahman...though Dil Se was better.....I can rate it at par with Taal and Yuva......songs looked good on screen and did not mar the story....it flowed with them...Pathshala and Roobaroo were the pick of the lot.....

Main message:
But after watching this movie I still feel whether this movie will inspire anyone....i have read articles in many forums that people are willing to change the world....but by discussing on the forum is not enuf........u have to fight for it.....i know people will forget all this in 2-3 months...and nothing will be done...thats why i feel that it was an unrealistic movie.....yeh i liked it...only thing was that the ending might not convey the exact message.....people will discuss it and forget.......

Indian Idol 2: Amey Date almost voted out

My favourite Amey Date was almost voted out of Indian Idol 2.....Dunno on what criteria people are judging.....
Karunya, Meenal, Amey are the singers that I would like to see in the top 3....

In this 3rd gala round, Amey sang the song 'Tum Jo mil' from Hanste Zakhm. I heard this song for the first time and surprisingly got hooked to it. I found the song in my Rafi MP3 collection and am listening to it since then...Amey sang this difficult song really well.....

Similarly Karunya sang 'Kawa Kawa' from Monsoon Wedding superbly....The judges even went on to praise this Andhraite who managed to sing a bhangra number....

In the next round, I guess Sandeep aur Ravi will be voted out....

Nice to see Anuj back in the Indian idols after Jolly was disqualified with prolonged chicken pox illness.....

Superb article on yesterday's gala round

Malamaal Weekly Preview

Priyadarshan should be able to score with this one after disappointing Garam Maasla and Kyon Ki....
the story of this movie looks really interesting and the starcast comprising of Riteish, Paresh, Om Puri and Rajpal Yadav arouses more excitement abt the movie.

Zinda: Music review

Wanted to write the music review for this movie since a long time…well here it is…..

Directed by father of all copycats “Sanjay Gupta”, the director of Kaante (Reservoir Digs), Musafir(U-Turn), Khauff(Juror), this too is a plagiarized film……Oldboy is the unlucky movie to be lifted…….

Well movie review apart, the songs of this album are excellent. The entire album is divided into 2 parts: lounge and club.

The lounge section is far better than club (it features only remixes)…

Yeh hai meri kahani sung by Strings is the pick of the lot. These guys should sing more in Bollywood. Pakistan has a big reservoir of talents when it comes to music: Atif, Raahat, Nusrat, Strings,….A wonderful track with great music.

Zinda hoon main and Kya main zinda hoon from Shibani. This gal keeps singing these techno numbers with such ease (remember “Sajna” from Waisa bhi hota hai part 2)….both these songs have been rendered beautifully. I guess only Sunidhi can match her voice.

Har Saans is a decent number with a lot of noise….it shows the angst the protagonist of the movie is going thru…..

Maula sung by Sanjay Dutt is okayish…nothing great to scribble abt.

Overall, a nice album to be played in cars at high volume…

This guy rocks.....

Roger Federer wins the Australian open defeating Baghdatis 5-7,7-5,6-0,6-2. In this past few years he has been very consistent with his performances on almost all kinda surfaces.

This is his 7th Grand slam title. I am amazed by the way he maintains his cool even during the most trying circumstances.

For more information on the Australian open final, check Sports Illustrated

Moreover our bharatvaasi Bhupathi won his 10th grand slam title.

Actress faints while watching Zinda

Excerpts from Mid-day.

Movie Review: Vaah! Life ho to Aisi

Mahesh Manjrekar turns up with another bad movie after a decent “Viruddh”. The story of this movie is ordinary…no great shakes…borrowed from various movies like Mr. India, Raju Chacha, The Ghost…no originality at all……..

Shahid is pathetic and cannot act…some of the child stars are likeable but a brilliant performer like Shweta Prasad (Makdee, Iqbal) is relegated to backseat. Amrita Rao doesn’t get much scope. Arshad Warsi seems wasted in a small miniscule role. None of the songs are worth listening a second time also…..

Sanjay Dutt is the only saving grace of the movie. …the special effects in the movie are decent but not upto the Hollywood standards……

The director tried to make a film that would have a fate like Mr.India but the collections ended up like that of Raju Chacha.

Rediff's list of award winners for 2005

Check this link "Rediff Movie Awards"

The winners selected are good. However these might not be popular choices. I guess these choices are choices for critics award

For example, Shreyas and Riteish winning Best Actor and Best Supporting actor respectively is in doubt considering the popularity of Amitabh (Black) and Abhishek(Sarkar).

Moreover Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi(Best director) and Iqbal (best film) may lose out again to Black because of popularity.

The toughest competition is in Best Supporting actress where Ayesha Kapoor (Black) will have to battle out with Shweta Prasad (Iqbal)

They have selected Chitrangadha (Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi) as the promising female newcomer. However since she has taken retirement from acting, Vidya Balan should be a deserving candidate.

Movie Review : Ek Ajnabee

Finally got a chance to watch Ek Ajnabee....IMHO this is one of the slickiest, stylish film made in Bollywood.....the story keeps you glued to your seats and the editing is very crisp....

Amitabh has come up with another powerpacked performance as an angry colonel... Rucha vaidya as anamika is excellent...nowadays we are seeing so many good child performances in Bollywood......Arjun does not get much scope to display his histrionics.....Perizaad is decent....

The song "Tere liye" oft repeated in the movie is beautifully sung by Kunal Ganjawala....

After watching this movie I realized why such films will not work in interiors....these films are made just for cosmopolitan cities and NRIs.....

Music Review: Rang de Basanti

A hit Rahman album after a long time. His latest albums Mangal Pandey and Bose were strictly ok. The credits form Kisna were shared by him and Ismail even though he turned up with an excellend haunting number “Hum hai is pal yahaan”

Coming back to Rang de Basanti the album has all kinda numbers: patriotic, soft numbers, fun tracks. The album seems to be missing a romantic number…..

The album has few good songs like the Pathshala, Khalbali, Rubaroo, Khoon chala, Lukka Chupi and Tu Bin bataye.

I am in really awe with Rubaroo and Pathshala (my fav track of this album)……these numbers remind me of DCH…these are typical AR Rahman numbers..check out for the lyrics of the song Pathshala…..
talli hokar girne se
samjhi humne gravity
ishq ka practical kiya
tab aayee clarity
na koi padhnewala, na koi sikhnewala
apni to pathshala, masti ki pathshala

Lukka chupi is a nice track sung by Lata after a longtime…was last heard in Lucky (Shayad yahin to pyar hai).
Khoon Chala is a very slow number sung by Mohit Chauhan (from Silk route). This one is a winner after his previous amazing track “Guncha Koi” from Main Meri Patni aur woh.
Tu Bin bataye has striking similarities with “O paalanhare” and it has been rendered beautifully by Madhushree
